Amazon, the online retail company, is preparing to test experimental wireless communications technology, according to Business Insider. Amazon filed documents for the FCC in order to begin.

The tests will include fixed-based stations and mobile devices, in rural Washington and near its company facilities in Seattle, Washington. The files request permission for a five-month test on various frequencies to test equipment and software.

It is not stated what the purpose of these tests are exactly but the filings strongly suggest that these tests are for Amazon’s Prime Air drone program. Facebook made a similar request a few months ago for its drone communications.

The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) meanwhile is also working on how to regulate drone flight as it becomes increasingly popularized by online company giants for automated distribution.
